Back in September we met with Lynn and Julie from Leading Link to discuss the possibility of going into partnership to lead this years Christmas Parade, part of the Christmas light switch on in Blyth Marketplace. We worked together on our bid and submitted our ideas then waited to see if we had been chosen and to our delight we were.
Once we were told we had the go ahead we began holding workshops at Silx and Newsham Youth Club creating amazing Christmas themed items to be used in the Parade, we also involved Waterloo House, the local residential home and they helped in the creation of some of the items, leading link worked closely with the local primary schools and made some very impressive items including a giant lit up lighthouse.
We made giant Christmas bauble lanterns, Christmas tree hats, snowflakes and a giant snowman all of which were adorned with glitter, sparkle and lights! A lot of the items made were displayed in a shop in the Keel Row Shopping Centre that we had use of on the lead up to the event.
On Friday (16th November) all of the young people from Silx, Newsham Youth club and all of the children that leading link had been working with met at the Keel Row to get ready for the event- all of the participants looked fabulous, there were Christmas trees, elves, gingerbread men and Christmas presents all ready to follow Santa and Mary Christmas through the market for the parade.
The parade kicked off at 6pm as the young people walked along the Keel Row and up through the Market with the Rock Choir belting out ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’ the parade was received by a very enthusiastic crowd who all took photos and cheered for the young people as they made their way to the front of the stage. The young people all looked fantastic and did an amazing job and we were very proud of each of them!
Once at the front the young people had photos taken and were in prime position to watch Father Elder bless the town, be entertained by the panto cast and watch XFactor Stars Reggie and Bollie perform and switch on the Christmas Lights!
Overall, it was a fabulous night and there was a great turn out, being involved was a great honour and has certainly got us all in the festive spirit!
