It’s official Silx Teen Bar Youth Project has been awarded The Best Youth Project award from Youth Focus North East and we couldn’t be any more proud!
The North East Young People’s Awards (formerly the POSBOs) were hosted by Youth Focus NE at a glitzy ceremony held at the BALTIC centre for contemporary art on Thursday 18th January.
Jackie, our senior youth worker along with Karl one of our Volunteers and Young people Lucie and Matty were in attendance to represent Silx.
The night kicked off at 5:45pm with welcome drinks and a delicious buffet, that the young people enjoyed. At 6:20pm the awards presentation began with awards being given out for Social Action, Young Carer and Young Activist.
At 7pm there was a break from the awards and the crowd were treated to entertainment from a very talented young performer Michael Gallagher!
Next Leon Mexter the Chief Exec of Youth Focus NE gave out some surprise awards to the steering group, which are a group of young volunteers that organised the awards and were very well deserved. Whilst on stage Leon Mexter also had another ‘special’ award to present that we noticed had its own slot in the programme separate from the other awards and did not have any nominations listed within the programme, this award was for the Best Group Project 2017.
….Jackie and the young people listened as Leon talked about the amazing work this project does and to their complete surprise and delight they realised he was talking about us! Silx Teen Bar had been awarded The Best Youth Project out of all of the groups in the North East! Our young volunteer Karl accepted the award and was thrilled along with Jackie, the young people and everyone else involved in the project that we were recognised and commended for the fabulous work we do here at Silx!
….After getting over the shock of being given such a wonderful accolade the group along with the rest of the crowd were treated to more entertainment from Robert Reed and Georgia Addison and more awards were presented for Peoples Environmental Project, Health and Wellbeing, Intergenerational Project, Inspirational young person, Young Volunteer and Young employee.
The ceremony ended with special thanks to all involved. We didn’t win the awards we had originally been shortlisted for but were incredibly honoured to get one of the most sought after achievements of the night.
Overall, the steering group at Youth Focus NE put together an incredible evening and we were privileged to be in the company of some of the North East’s most inspiring Young People and Youth Groups.
Big Well Done to all of the Winners and Nominees!
