If you live in Blyth and the surrounding areas, unless you have been living under a rock for the last few months then you would have surely heard all about Punch Drunk Comedy.

Punch Drunk was set up by Gav and Kai Humphries as a comedy night once a month at the Newsham Side Club, but now the Punch Drunk name is much more than a comedy night, yes the nights they run are at the hub of what they do but they have now began what they describe as a ‘community movement’ and are working together with lots of amazing causes to bring the people of Blyth and beyond together.

They are on a mission to make us all laugh and raise a hell of a lot of money and awareness for some fantastic charities in the process. Some of the workers here at Silx have attended the Comedy nights and have been overwhelmed by not only the hilarious comedians but also the amount of time and effort that is put in by Gav and his army to raise money for charities that are close to our hearts (Jackie our Senior Youth Worker tragically lost her beautiful granddaughter Ellie to Meningitis in 2010 and her Son Dan and Daughter in Law Rachel now run the Princess Ellie’s Trust to raise money for the Meningitis Foundation and The PICU at the RVI in memory of Ellie- the Punch Drunk events in Blyth raise money for the trust every month. Sarah our Progression Worker’s niece Jessica was born in 2008 and after a traumatic birth suffers with 4 limb Cerebral Palsy which leaves her unable to walk or talk, she is visually impaired and is peg fed- she attends the Little Miracle’s Group in Ashington which is a beneficiary of The Bradley’s Smile Trust- which the Punch Drunk team raise funds for every month at their Bedlington events)

So, with Punch Drunk in our hearts we invited them down to Silx so they could find out all about what we do to support the younger generation of Blyth. Gav & Lauren came to visit us on 1st June during one of our 1st Step sessions and spoke to our workers and young people and learnt all about Silx, our history and how we work. We discussed the exciting opportunities they have in the pipeline for a Magazine, we are hoping to get involved with this so we can showcase the fantastic work that goes on in Silx and develop activities for local young people. It seems that team Punch Drunk have a lot of good ideas and we are looking forward to supporting their progress…..
