Awards season appears to be upon us in Northumberland. Just before the Easter break Silx staff and young people were invited along to two award ceremonies – the firs was on Wednesday 23rd March and was the ‘Spirit of the Community Awards’ hosted by Homes for Northumberland and the second was the very next day, on Thursday 24th March and was ‘The High Sheriff of Northumberland youth against crime awards’

The first ceremony was held at the Holiday Inn, and was hosted by local celebrity/comedian Steffen Peddie. The night kicked off with a buffet and welcome drinks and the young people that attended the ceremony were beginning to get very excited.

Raffle tickets were sold throughout the evening to raise money for the Tiny Lives which is the charity that supports premature and sick newborn babies on the neonatal unit at the RVI, before the awards were given out a representative from Tiny Lives gave a speech about how money from all groups involved have helped support the fabulous work they do.

Steffen Peddie kept the crowd entertained with his warm, sharp comedy- involving the audience at every opportunity creating a fantastic atmosphere for handing out the awards.

Everybody that was nominated was invited up on stage to collect a ‘going the extra mile’ certificate, this was a nice touch so that everyone that took part in the night were able to be recognised for the incredible things they provide to the community.

We were nominated in the ‘Best Young People’s Community Group’ category and to our absolute delight were announced as the winners! The group of young people attending the ceremony were overjoyed and felt very important going up on to the stage to collect the award.

We are very happy to recognised once again (We don’t like to brag, but we must be doing something right, eh?) for the fantastic work that takes place at Silx every week, we attract well over 700 young people each year and we are celebrating 20 years of service to Blyth this year and couldn’t be more proud of our achievements.

After the awards were given out the young people were invited to be photographed with all of the other winners, what an honour to be amongst some of the most inspirational people in the county. Overall, the night was a fantastic success- well done Homes for Northumberland!

The next day, workers and young people attended the high sheriff awards at the Josephine Butler Campus, The Northumberland Church of England Academy. All groups that attended were invited up on stage to collect a certificate in recognition of great and valuable services to the community. Ben and Kyle two of or young people collected the certificate for Silx and were thrilled to meet the high sheriff herself and Si King of The Hairy Bikers fame. After the certificates were given out the crowd were entertained by Bad Apples and NCEA CCF Pipes and Drums Band. After the ceremony, everyone was invited to eat and drink and mingle with all of the other groups, and their was also lots of opportunities for photographs with Si King.

The young people had a wonderful time, a big thank you to Community Foundation and The High Sheriff for such an enjoyable night, once again it was an honour to be recognised amongst some of Northumberland’s most reputable projects.
