We’ve been on a bit of an International Journey at Silx recently….. As some of you may already know we dedicate our Wednesday evening Teen Bar session to Health and Wellbeing and one activity that is always very popular with our young people is Cooking! The young people love to eat (well, they are growing teenagers) and enjoy trying new foods and exploring new recipes. With this in mind we decided that we would explore food from different corners of the globe and pick a different country and recipe each week.
Workers put Country names into a hat and each week the young people chose one and explored recipes to create online- check out below which countries we ‘Visited’
WEEK 1- MEXICO: MEXICAN CHICKEN TACOS
Week one took us to Mexico, the young people have made fajitas and chilli before so for this project they opted for Chicken Tacos and they were delicious…..
WEEK 2- TURKEY: TURKISH FALAFEL
When Turkey was chosen the young people were scratching their heads about what to make until they found a vegetarian recipe for falafel, this is something that some of the young people had heard of but never tried, they made these from scratch and the results were great!
WEEK 3- FRANCE: SWEET FRENCH TOAST
Week 3, we visited France and kept it simple making Sweet French Toast- Mmmmmm
WEEK 4- USA: HOT DOGS & SWEET POTATO FRIES
Week 4 and we were in the U S of A and the young people wanted to make hot dogs just like the ones you would find on the stalls in New York, they teamed these up with Sweet Potato Fries (just to make it that little bit healthier….)
WEEK 5- SPAIN: CHICKEN & CHORIZO PAELLA
Whenever you think of a traditional Spanish Dish you think of Paella! The young people really wanted to make this but minus the seafood and found a really tasty Chicken & Chorizo version, this was a big hit with the entire pan being devoured!
WEEK 6- ITALY: PIZZA
Week 6 found us ending this project in Italy and there was only one thing on the young people’s minds….. PIZZA!
The young people loved taking part in this project and aswell as enjoying tasting all of the food, they learnt about different cultures and each person that took part received an AQA unit Award for ‘Cooking Around The World’ WELL DONE 🙂
