On 28th/29th October last year Regent Pool and Snooker club that is based on Seaforth Street in Blyth, held a 24 hour Pool Marathon to raise money for Silx. The idea came from Brett who plays for the Regent Pool Team. Brett attended Silx when he was younger and said he wanted to give something back to Silx for all of the support he received when he was young, recently Brett called into Silx to have a chat about what we did to help him….

Brett met Chris Antony (Trustee/Director) and Jackie Long (Senior Youth Worker) back in 2004 when he was a pupil at Blyth Community College. Brett told us that he was a young carer for his Mum who sadly passed away when he was 22. Brett was under quite a lot of pressure being a young carer and told us that he struggled in his lessons and was bullied. When Brett met Chris and Jackie through the youth office at School he was allowed to do his lessons in there instead and received a lot support outside of school too.

Brett attended Silx most evenings where he learnt to play pool and built up new friendships. he took part in lots of activities and volunteered with fundraising events, he recalls going on a lot of trips with Lightwater Valley and Ford Castle being two of his personal highlights. Brett explained that without the support of Silx he wouldn’t have coped as well with the bullying, and being involved with us helped him as he got older. Brett now volunteers at the Regent Snooker Club helping with events and playing for their pool team.

The pool marathon was a great success and raised an amazing £570 for Silx which we intend to use to buy a brand new pool table. We want to say a massive Thank you to Brett and all of the people at Regent Pool and Snooker club for thinking of Silx and raising this Money for us!
